A las 00.00 hora local (06.00 GMT) de este miércoles 21 de Diciembre 2011, empezó a transcurrir el año 5128 del quinto sol establecido en el calendario solar de la ancestral cultura maya, que a su vez comenzó el 13 de agosto del año 3114, y que, según las evidencias científicas encontradas en estelas, esfinges y códices mayas, predice “un cambio de época” para la humanidad.
El científico guatemalteco Iván Azurdia explicó que “a las 00.00 (06.00 GMT) del 21 de diciembre de 2012, los planetas del sistema solar se posicionarán de forma vertical en la parte más oscura de la boca de la serpiente emplumada (llamada Kukulcán por los mayas y Quetzalcóatl por los aztecas), y se alinearán con los sitios sagrados del mundo maya”.

La tarde del miércoles 21 de Diciembre se encenderá el Fuego Nuevo, ceremonia en la que participa el Instituto Municipal del Deporte en un recorrido realizado por deportistas y antorchistas, el punto de encuentro será en las Ruinas del Rey a partir de las 14 horas.
El recorrido culminará en la avenida Tulum con Bonampak donde se prevé que a las 17 horas realicen la ceremonia solemne: una plegaria por la vida y por la tierra, según señaló el secretario.
El objetivo de esta actividad es la reactivación de la promoción turística y la reincorporación de la etnia maya.
El fuego nuevo era la más importante ceremonia calendárica llevada a cabo por los pueblos del México Antiguo.
Era una oportunidad para que todos los moradores se reunieran, y es, probablemente, el mejor símbolo de la unidad de Anáhuac, ya que todos los pueblos participaban.
